Memories of Bedlingtonshire and Beyond

I visited a ladies’ meeting at St Cuthbert’s Church, Bedlington at Christmas 2000. We were treated to a talk/demonstration/ reminiscence/language lesson from the author of this book, who has clearly lived his life to the full. His talk was a real celebration of Bedlingtonshire and beyond (even to the edges of Kielder). I had to drag myself away before the end and it was a real drag, because Evan Martin has the capacity to see the richness of ordinary life and show that it isn’t just ordinary. I don’t remember if he sang that night but the whole event sang. We laughed and gasped and nodded and stared like the children who were lucky enough to have been taught by him in the past.
