Consett - A Commemoration of the Works
It was largely the manufacture of iron and steel that saw
Consett develop from a small village of a few cottages to a large prosperous
and important community whose products and name become known throughout the
world. At one time ‘The Works’ employed some 6,000 people and
covered over 650 acres.
To mark the twentieth anniversary of the closure of the iron and steelworks
complex in Consett it was decided to make a record of the culture, the business
acumen and the community which grew up with that industry about them. It is
also a record for posterity and the younger generations who now have little
to remind them of the industry which brought their families to the area.
This book is dedicated to everyone who ever worked there. To all those who
gave their blood, sweat and tears, and indeed their lives in some instances,
to earn a living.
