Dipton Remembered

The village of Dipton ( Collierley) owes its existence to coalmining. It was one of the first areas in our district, from where coal was transported down to the Tyne and Wear, by means of primitive wagonways, criss-crossing the countryside. These were owned by various landowners, causing great competition and rivalry.
This book is about the people of the village, mostly descendants of those former miners, and their families. The subjects covered are, around the area – including pubs and shops – education, religion, sport and youth groups.
On compiling the history of Annfield Plain & District, Jack was offered many photographs of Dipton, by Hylton Marrs, who is also interested in local history. There were so many pictures of Dipton, that Jack invited Hylton, to join with him in writing a separate book on that area. This book is a result of that joining of minds and interest.
