Durham Bairns is a nostalgic trip through the ‘best
days of our lives’ – childhood. We start this journey with ‘Days
To Remember’, and there is no better way to start this section than
with Christmas. Other memorable days are recalled, including wartime, VE celebrations,
Coronations and Jubilees. A more tragic day is remembered when 183 children
died in the disaster at Victoria Hall in Sunderland.
A major part of any child’s life is their time at school and the next
section includes many images from throughout Durham to illustrate this. Chapters
on play and sport show many favourite activities – Mount-a-kitty, May
poles, hula-hoops, football, netball and riding your bikes.
Moving on to ‘Days Out’, happy times of summers spent at the beach,
trips to Saltwell Park, the Hoppings and the zoo are remembered. Times spent
with your friends – from jazz bands to Brownies and Scouts to theatre
groups – are shown.
Finally, we see our friends and families in many cherished photographs that
recall the time when we were bairns.
