This collection of photographs
and stories of coal mining in County Durham provides a glimpse of an industry
that once dominated the North East. Today there is little to show that Durham
was once a county built on coal but there are many who have vivid memories
of the effect it had on the area.
We start this People’s History with a tour of the county with views
of many of the collieries in the area. Some are well known while others have
almost been forgotten.
The ‘Dark Days’ of mining are recalled with stories of wartime
as well as the injuries and disasters in the pits. The price of coal has been
a high one and every pit in Durham has its share of tragic tales.
Although times were often hard in the coalfields, the miners knew how to enjoy
themselves. There was no bigger day than the Durham Miners’ Gala and
there are many memorable images and poignant memories of the ‘Big Meeting’.
The pitmen’s pastimes – football, cricket, bowls, leek growing,
pigeon racing, whippets and music – are also shown.
Finally, there is a section which looks at pit life. From coal deliveries
to washing day, the everyday events in the colliery village are remembered.
