As the saying goes ‘A woman’s place is in the
home’, but is it? Over the years, women’s roles have changed and
this book aims to give an insight into what varied and sometimes dangerous
occupations women have followed.
During the past century women have proved to be a resilient and versatile
section of the community. Life was hard for the ordinary women of old County
Durham, but when you meet them and listen to their stories you realise that
they were extraordinary in every way, facing life’s hardships the only
way they knew, which was making the most of it.
The lives of women of old County Durham dramatically changed when war was
declared. Whether it was the First World War or Second, some loved ones left
and never returned, but life had to go on. Women’s work was vital during
the war years whether it be in munitions factories or on the land. Even Lord
Haw Haw mentioned the ‘Aycliffe Angels’ in his propaganda broadcasts.
This book is a tribute to the hard working, irrepressible women of old County
Durham, whose strength of character never ceases to amaze.
