This selection of over 200 photographs shows the diversity
of the district. Unique images take the reader through each community to show
local people from childhood to church and from wartime to leisure and sport.
Other photographs illustrate the progress of change in the streets, pits,
shops and fields of the area.
Although associated strongly for many years with coal mining, agriculture
has always played a prominent part, and since the end of the Second World
War there has been a programme of factory building to accommodate new industry.
The district can boast a castle and several manor houses, churches and chapels
of different denominations, and it also played a prominent part in the early
development of the railways.
The book provides a lasting reminder of the many changes in the area and reflects
the rich heritage of the local community.
