Hetton-le-Hole played a historic role in the growth of the
railways and coalmining, and during the nineteenth century families travelled
from all over the country to work in local collieries.
Today there are many reminders of a proud and often very hard past, but there
is also every reason to be proud of a present where so many people are contributing
to an active community.
The author’s aim has been to show through old and contemporary photographs
the sheer variety of the area and the people who have made it and are making
it.
