This collection of over 200 photographs brings to life the
history of the villages around Penshaw Monument. Remembering how things were
will bring back some wonderful nostalgic memories of the mining and agricultural
heritage of the area.
Starting with Cox Green and Penshaw, the author then moves on to feature the
villages of Shiney Row, Herrington Burn, Philadelphia and Newbottle.
From the Tivoli Cinema in Herrington Burn to Birkbeck’s shoe shop in
Shiney Row and Philadelphia’s Lambton Castle Inn to Newbottle Co-op,
many well remembered buildings are shown.
There are then unique images which show local people at school, work, church
and chapel. At the heart of many of these photographs are the people of the
villages.
The area has seen many changes, however, readers can now remember times long
gone as they take a trip down memory lane in this fascinating book.
