This collection of stories and photographs is a people’s
history of Sunderland’s shipyards told through the memories of local
men and women.
The stories - which range from comedy to tragedy – recall life in a
shipyard community, memorable launches, workmates, special occasions as well
as the social life and comradeship of the yards.
Times were often hard for shipyard workers and sad times are also recalled.
The yards were hazardous places to work and there are many tragic tales.
The hardship of wartime - when Sunderland made a massive contribution to the
country’s victory - is also featured. The stories of the last days of
the yards are tinged with bitterness and anger that a great industry was allowed
to decline.
Although the yards have closed and the river now silent our industrial heritage
is remembered with pride by the workers who earned Sunderland the title –
‘The biggest shipbuilding town in the World.’
