Having already produced the highly successful book, Byermoor,
Marley Hill & Sunniside, a follow up was inevitable. The interest generated
within the community by our first book was astonishing and shows the fascination
that local people have in their own history. This new collection of over 200
photographs once again acknowledges the part coal mining played in our lives,
but we also dwell on the vital role played by the farmers, market gardeners
and food distributors. Throughout the grim years of the Second World War,
when our island was virtually under siege, the agricultural industry fed the
nation and their contribution to the war effort was vital. The role of the
agricultural industry has not diminished – home grown produce is still
a vital commodity.
The book pays tribute to the ‘ordinary’ people of our villages
and we have included many of the families and individuals who have contributed
to our community in their own special way. It is unfortunate but inevitable
that some people will be omitted, but the selection appearing within these
pages are representative of the many characters who have lived and worked
along and around ‘The Turnpike Road’.
