This new collection of over 250 pictures is a vivid portrait
of Willington. The photographs take the reader through a full century, portraying
how the march of time has changed the face of the village.
Starting with a tour of the area, the author shows the colliery rows, local
shops, pubs and landmarks. Many fondly remembered buildings – including
St John’s Church, the Co-op Stores and the Empire and Empress Picture
Houses – are also recalled.
The village’s rich mining heritage is remembered with many unique images.
Photographs and memories of war pay tribute to the sacrifices of Willington
people. Local chapels and churches are also featured as well as their numerous
activities, clubs and organisations. Finally, we see the young ’uns
of the village at school and at play.
As the pages are turned many memories will surface and familiar faces will
be recognised, possibly old friends or relatives and, in some cases, probably
the readers themselves.
